PETALING JAYA:

The remains of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir were brought out of the forensic medicine department at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu at about 9.30pm today after the post-mortem was completed.

It is understood that the procedure concluded at 7.30pm, and the body will be reburied at the Tanjung Ubi Muslim cemetery at Kampung Mesapol in Sipitang, about 130km away, tonight.

Kota Kinabalu police chief Kasim Muda said there were no untoward incidents. Members of the public had gathered at the hospital compound since this morning.

“Everything was calm, and I thank everyone for their cooperation. I request that the public now cooperate by dispersing,” Bernama reported him as saying.

Zara’s body was exhumed yesterday evening before it was taken to the hospital.

On Friday, the Attorney-General’s Chambers said the remains needed to be exhumed to enable a post-mortem procedure to be carried out on the Form 1 student.

The AGC said it was of the view that further police investigation was necessary to ensure all aspects of the case could be thoroughly examined.

Zara was found unconscious at 4am on July 16 after she allegedly fell from the third floor of her school’s hostel in Papar, Sabah.

She died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital the following day.
