KOTA KINABALU, Sept 13 — The legal team representing the mother of Zara Qairina Mahathir has urged that all parties should be cautious when criticising and commenting on social media during the ongoing inquest.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the lawyers said public remarks risk undermining the judicial process and could create issues of sub judice.
The team, comprising Rizwandean M Borhan, Shahlan Jufri, Mohd Syarulnizam Mohd Mohd Salleh, Mohd Luqman Syazwan Zabidi, Farrah Nasser and Elhanan James, said six witnesses have testified so far and that proceedings were progressing satisfactorily.
They thanked the public for their support through the Justice For Zara solidarity gatherings and donations which helped cover the cost of expert witnesses.
However, they noted that several individuals had already been charged over speeches or online comments linked to the Justice For Zara campaign, and stressed that the name of Zara should not be misused.
The lawyers also called for all solidarity gatherings to be put on hold until the inquest is completed, in line with the wishes of Zara’s mother.
They added that gatherings may resume after the inquest concludes, but for now the focus should be on allowing the court to carry out its duty. — Daily Express
