Zara Qairina's mother denies linking daughter's death to VIPs

KOTA KINABALU: The mother of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir has denied ever making any statement linking her daughter’s death to individuals with very important person (VIP) status.

In a statement issued through her legal representatives, Noraidah Lamat also distanced herself from several claims that have been circulating on social media regarding the case.

“We wish to clarify that our client, Noraidah Lamat, mother of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir, has never issued any statement suggesting the involvement of any high-profile individual or VIP in connection with Zara’s death,” said lawyers Hamid Ismail and Shahlan Jufri.

They described such claims as unfounded and not originating from their client.

Sabah Education Department director Datuk Raisin Saidin had said earlier that the three students are not children of VIPs, contrary to recent claims circulating on social media.

Noraidah also said that she had no knowledge of a rumour alleging that students shouted “you’re a murderer” at a particular student on the day of Zara’s death.

“Our client only became aware of this claim after it went viral on social media,” the lawyers said.

The said that Noraidah did not claim that three students from SMKA Tun Mustapha were transferred on the day of Zara’s death.

“She only learned of this information after it was widely shared online.”

The lawyers urged the public to refrain from spreading speculation or unverified claims involving Zara, her family, or others.

“Disseminating false information could jeopardise the ongoing police investigation and lead to defamatory consequences for those involved.”

They also encouraged anyone with credible information to come forward and assist police with their investigation.
