PETALING JAYA:

Zara Qairina Mahathir’s body was exhumed this evening, a day after the Attorney-General’s Chambers instructed police to do so to complete their investigation into the death of the Form 1 student.

About 60 relatives, some from Brunei, and Labuan, were present when the body was exhumed at the Kampung Mesapol Muslim cemetery in Sipitang , The Borneo Post reported.

Officers from the Sabah Islamic religious department and politicians were also present, while members of the public also turned up in show of solidarity.

It is believed that the remains will be sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu for a post-mortem.

Zara was found unconscious at 4am on July 16 after she allegedly fell from the third floor of her school’s hostel in Papar, Sabah.

She died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital the following day.

Sabah police commissioner Jauteh Dikun had previously said they had not ruled out the possibility that she had been bullied.

The AGC had said a post-mortem was necessary to ensure that additional information and evidence could be obtained by the police to complete their investigation.

It also said that after reviewing the preliminary report by the police into the teenager’s death, it found a need for the matter to be investigated further.
