Zara audio clip genuine, lawyer says, washing machine claim rejected

KUALA LUMPUR: A lawyer for the family of Zara Qairina Mahathir said the viral 44-second audio recording, featuring a conversation between the late student and her mother about a person identified as ‘Kak M’, is authentic.

Hamid Ismail, who was appointed by Zara’s mother, Noraidah Lamat, said the audio recording had been handed to the police for further action, Berita Harian reported.

Hamid also urged the public to stop creating various theories and spreading baseless speculation about the death of the 13-year-old student.

This follows the emergence of various wild narratives on social media, which, according to the lawyer, are not only disrupting the investigation process but also have the potential to tarnish the image and dignity of the victim and her family.

Hamid said the focus of all parties should be on the process of justice, not on adding to the confusion with sensational speculation.

“Stop making such speculation,” he said simply when asked to comment on the latest allegations circulating on social media, which claimed that Zara was put into a washing machine, causing internal injuries.

The allegations have been circulating for several days across various anonymous social media accounts.

The Form One student at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Tun Datu Mustapha in Papar was found unconscious after allegedly falling from a hostel building on July 16.

Zara was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital (HQE I) the following day.

The teenager’s death sparked widespread public reaction after allegations of bullying and flaws in the initial investigation emerged, including claims that no post-mortem was conducted before the burial.
