GEORGE TOWN, Oct 7 — The North Coastal Paired Road (NCPR) project is now in the final stage of detailed design preparations, state exco for infrastructure, transport and digital Zairil Khir Johari said today.

He said the sub-agreements for each work package were currently being finalised with the relevant agencies and the state legal adviser.

“We are now in the process of finalising these two key components with the relevant agencies and the state’s legal adviser,” he said after inspecting slope repair works along Jalan Batu Ferringhi.

Zairil explained that sub-agreements were needed as each package required its own contract.

“Several workshops have been held, and the project is now in its final stages,” he said.

The 10.61km NCPR, which will serve as an alternative route connecting Tanjung Bungah and Teluk Bahang, is expected to begin in 2026.

The RM2.9 billion highway is scheduled for completion in 2031 and is aimed at easing traffic congestion along the northern corridor of Penang island while boosting the area’s socio-economic and tourism development.

Zairil said the project remains on schedule despite reports that the contractor was facing financial difficulties.

“We’ve heard about the matter, but so far it has not affected works on the project,” he said, adding that everything is progressing as planned.
