TIANJIN: Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Aziz today congratulated badminton pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei, who made history by bagging Malaysia’s first ever mixed doubles world title at the World Championships in Paris.
Speaking to Malaysian media here, Tengku Zafrul, who is Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had also extended his congratulations to the pair.
“Congratulations to our mixed doubles pair Chen and Toh, who won the World Championships title for the first time in our history.
“The prime minister also extended his congratulations to them,” he said.
Tang Jie-Ee Wei carved their names into history tonight by clinching the nation’s first-ever mixed doubles world title.
The world No. 4 pair were firing on all cylinders as they swept aside China‘s Jiang Zhen Bang–Wei Ya Xin 21-15, 21-14 in a dominant straight-games victory at the Adidas Arena, sealing only Malaysia’s second World Championships crown overall after Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik’s breakthrough triumph in 2022
Tengku Zafrul, who is also the International Trade and Industry Minister, said it was a proud moment for Malaysia.
“This is a special gift for Malaysia in conjunction with our National Day.
“We are on the right track with our new blueprint for badminton, which is Tangkis 2030,” he said.
Tengku Zafrul also hoped that Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah would triumph in their women’s doubles final match against China‘s world No. 1 pair Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning.
“We are now watching and supporting Pearly and Thinaah in the women’s doubles final. We wish them all the best,” he said.
Tengku Zafrul and Transport Minister Anthony Loke, also joined members of the Malaysia media in watching the Pearly and Thinaah match on their mobile phones here.
Both ministers are accompanying the prime minister on his four-day working visit to China.
