Write to Umno if you want to return, Ahmad Maslan tells Bersatu

PONTIAN: Bersatu must hold an official discussion if it wishes to cooperate with or rejoin the party, said Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.

He said such a discussion must include a formal letter expressing Bersatu’s interest, which would then be brought to the attention of the party’s Supreme Council.

“There has been no discussion at the Supreme Council level regarding the proposal made by Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin at the recent meeting.

“In fact, previous meetings also never touched on the issue of cooperating with Bersatu.

“Of course, such an important matter must be discussed at the Supreme Council level.

“If Bersatu wants to cooperate or is interested in rejoining Umno, they should submit a formal letter so that an official discussion can be initiated.

“Stop bringing up this matter in the media. Without a formal application, how can the Supreme Council discuss it officially?” he said.

Ahmad Maslan was speaking at a press conference after launching the Construction Revolution 4.0 Tour and myDigital Contractor (MDK) programme in Benut, Pontian, today.

Previously, Hamzah was reported as saying that Bersatu is open to cooperating with Umno, as both parties share similar ideological foundations.

He also reportedly said that several former and MCA leaders had registered as Bersatu members.

Asked to comment on Umno Veterans secretary Datuk Mustapha Yaakub’s recent suggestion that Bersatu should dissolve and return to Umno, Ahmad Maslan — who is also Pontian Umno division chief — said such a scenario was not impossible, citing historical precedent.

He noted that in 1996, Semangat 46 was dissolved by its president Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, and all its members were accepted back into Umno ‘en bloc’ by then Umno president Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“If Bersatu wants to do the same, of course the matter will be discussed by the Supreme Council.

“What’s important is that it must be done through official channels. Write a letter — don’t keep raising it in the media without taking formal steps,” he said.
