KUALA LUMPUR: World champions Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei are itching to get back on the arena as they gear up for the China Masters from Sept 16-21.
They skipped this week’s Hong Kong Open, a Super 500 event, after their mixed doubles coach, Nova Widianto, decided to lessen their tournament load.
He wants them to focus only on Super 750 tournaments and above after their world title triumph confirmed their spot at the season-ending World Tour Finals in December.
Tang Jie said: “For us, being world champions is already in the past.”
“Every tournament is a new challenge and we just want to start again from zero.”
Ee Wei echoed her partner’s sentiments, stressing the need to stay grounded.
“We don’t want to think too much about being world champions. We just want to enjoy our game, stay humble and keep working hard,” she said.
Tang Jie-Ee Wei’s world triumph in Paris is bound to raise expectations, with opponents now seeing them as the pair to beat.
But Tang Jie is unfazed. “We cannot control what other people think about us. We just want to focus on ourselves and give our best for the country,” he said.
