MOSCOW, Sept 25 (Bernama) — World Atomic Week, the world’s largest gathering on nuclear and related industries, kicked off here Thursday, drawing delegates from over 100 countries, including Malaysia, to discuss the future of nuclear energy amid growing global demand.

Held in conjunction with the 80th anniversary of Russia’s nuclear industry, the four-day programme at Moscow’s Exhibition of National Economy Achievements (VDNH) is organised by Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation under the theme “Everything starts with an atom.”

The event gathers policymakers, scientists, industry leaders, and media representatives from over 100 countries, featuring plenary sessions, roundtable discussions, and a youth segment. More than 18,000 participants are expected before it concludes on Sept 28.

In his opening remarks, First Deputy Head of the Presidential Executive Office of Russia Sergei Kiriyenko stressed that nuclear energy depends on long-term cycles founded on deep mutual trust.

“Russia and Rosatom have always upheld this principle by building lasting partnerships, sharing expertise and creating joint ventures in global markets. We are convinced that modern technologies should bring prosperity and well-being, not be hindered by restrictions or sanctions,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rosatom director general Alexey Likhachev said the week-long event also features the Global Atomic Forum and the BRICS Nuclear Platform meeting.

“Our goal is to move together into a future where nuclear power has no alternative as the primary source of clean and environmentally friendly energy,” he said.

Meanwhile, World Nuclear Association (WNA) director general Dr Sama Bilbao Y Leon said there is growing global demand for nuclear technology and power generation.

“We continue to see the growing importance of nuclear energy everywhere in the world. Once again, we confirmed the growing demand for nuclear technology and for nuclear generation that is noticed all over the world,” she said.

She added the association unites the global nuclear industry, bringing together experts from key companies and countries to learn from one another, work together and advance the sector.
