Women's rugby get major boost as SRU introduces new women's division

KUALA LUMPUR: Rugby Union (SRU) have further strengthened their development programmes for the new season with the introduction of a new women’s division for their state league which kicks off today (April 26).

Officially named the Sports Council-SRU League, the competition is being held weekly at Padang Astaka, Petaling Jaya with the finals scheduled to be held at Stadium Sultan Suleiman, Klang on July 12-13.

For the first time, the League now includes a women’s division which features five teams this season – Cobra Venom, UPNM Barbarians, KL Tigers RFC, Armed Forces as well as Sarawak Rugby.

The women’s division is a major boost for women’s rugby in Malaysia as there have only been a handful of competitions available for women – especially in the 15s format – previously.

With the Malaysia Rugby League (MRL) not being held since 2019, the Selangor League men’s competition is now the most prestigious men’s inter-club 15s competition in the country.

Division one this season features KL Tigers, RMAF Blackhawks, UiTM Lions, Royal Selangor Club K9s, ARC Knight as well as traditional heavyweights Cobra.

Division two features SMS Old Boys, Rhinoz Warriors, Cobra Stings and KL Tigers’ second team.

SRU president Lim Yi Wei and Selangor Sports Council executive director Nizam Marjugi officiated the launch of the new season for the league in Petaling Jaya recently.

The league is supported by Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated, Petaling Jaya City Council, Klang Royal City Council, Integrated Envirotech Sdn Bhd and 99 Speedmart Sdn Bhd.
