SARIKEI: A 22-year-old woman has been sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment by the Sessions Court after being found guilty of child neglect that resulted in the death of her young son.

Angel Yang Pei Yun was convicted on Thursday (Nov 13) under Section 31(1)(a) of the Children’s Act 2001 for failing to provide proper care and protection to the child, whose fatal injuries were attributed to her negligence.

Judge Stella Augustine ordered that Yang’s sentence take effect from the date of her remand on October 31, 2025.

Upon completing her prison term, she must also serve a two-year good behaviour bond of RM50,000 (without deposit), backed by two local sureties, and perform 240 hours of social work.

According to the report, the accused from Julau had neglected her four-year-old son, who died later at Hospital Sibu.

The case came to light on October 21 when the boy was brought to the hospital’s emergency ward at about 3.30pm with severe head injuries.

The child was admitted to the paediatric intensive care unit after being found with a fractured skull and brain haemorrhage. He was reported to be in a weak condition and believed to have not received proper care.

Commenting on the case, Julau OCPD DSP Alif Haiqal Ramesh Abdullah said the case should serve as a reminder to all parents and guardians.

“My message is that parents or guardians must always pay close attention and care to their children. Their safety must be prioritised as long as they are under their care, especially young children, so they are not neglected should any life-threatening incident occur,” he said.
