KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 12 — The girlfriend of a father whose two children died after their car slid into Sungai Linggi estuary in Tanjung Agas, Port Dickson last week has been released on bail.

Only the father, Abdul Rahman Mahmud, whose six- and eight-year-old children drowned in the incident, was charged at the Seremban Sessions Court today.

Negeri Sembilan Police Chief Datuk Alzafny Ahmad said the 41-year-old woman will act as a prosecution witness in the case against him.

“The investigation is complete and has been referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for prosecution. The police have received instructions to charge the father under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code,” he said, according to Harian Metro.

“The woman has been granted bail under Section 118 of the Criminal Procedure Code and will serve as a prosecution witness,” he added.

The incident involved two siblings, aged eight and six, who were said to have been inside the car when it began rolling towards the river.

According to a preliminary police investigation, the father had stepped out of the parked vehicle to smoke a cigarette when the car started moving. The engine was off at the time.

While passersby managed to rescue a female occupant said to be the father’s girlfriend, the children were trapped inside and drowned.
