Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Aminuddin Harun has taken a swipe at the idea floated by some NGOs to rename Port Dickson as Pantai Dermaga.
Aminuddin said that if people are so eager to rename towns, they should not stop at Port Dickson.
“I was informed about several NGOs led by Pertubuhan Pemerkasaan Identiti together with Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia who want to change Port Dickson’s name to Pantai Dermaga.
“Change the names all at once. Don’t just single out Port Dickson. Change Port Klang, Kuala Lumpur, George Town… why one by one? It will take too long,” Sinar Harian reported him as saying.
He also asked how Kuala Lumpur ended up with its name when the word “kuala” refers to an estuary near the sea.
“Maybe, change it to Ulu (upstream) Lumpur instead,” the Port Dickson MP quipped.
Aminuddin said Port Dickson is hardly an obscure place in need of rebranding, and the seaside town has long been known locally and internationally as a beach resort.
“It’s up to them. For me, if you want to change names, do it for the whole country. Changing them one by one will only make it difficult for mapping authorities to manage,” he said.
