The biggest city in the United States has a new mayor. Democrat Zohran Mamdani, whose rapid political ascent has captivated US politics, won the New York City mayoral election on Wednesday, defeating Republican Curtis Silwa and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Mamdani, 34, was an overwhelming favorite entering the vote. Silwa, a self-described populist known in the city for his vigilante-like Guardian Angels Group, was considered a huge outsider. Cuomo, who resigned as governor in 2021 following sexual misconduct allegations, ran as an independent after a surprise defeat in the Democratic primary.
