KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian doubles pairs Chia Weijie-Lwi Sheng Hao and Cheng Su Hui-Tan Zhing Yi brought some cheer to the national camp by advancing to the second round of the Korea Masters on Tuesday.

The victories came after no Malaysian players progressed past the qualifying rounds earlier in the day.

Men’s doubles Weijie-Sheng Hao brightened the mood with a 21-16, 21-13 victory over ‘s An Yun Seong-Park Kyung Hoon at the Wonkwang University Cultural and Sports Centre.

The world No. 48, who were runners-up at the Malaysia Super 100 last month — their first final appearance of the year — will next face eighth seeds Chang Ko Chi-Po Li Wei of Taiwan.

World No. 84 women’s doubles pair Su Hui-Zhing Yi continued Malaysia’s winning momentum with a straight-games win over ‘s Kim Yun Ju-Lee Chae Eun, 21-12, 21-19, in 39 minutes.

Su Hui-Zhing Yi dominated the first game but faced stiff resistance in the second, with the Koreans leading 17-13 at one stage.

The Malaysians, however, regrouped to reel off seven consecutive points to reach match point before sealing the victory.

They will meet third seeds Sung Shuo Yi-Yu Chien Hui of Taiwan in the next round.

In contrast, the South Korean-Malaysian partnership of Choi Sol Gyu-Goh V Shem, ranked world No. 68, were shown the exit by Taiwan’s world No. 20 Lee twins, Fang Chih-Fang Jen, 21-12, 21-19.
