JOHOR BAHRU, Nov 4 (Bernama) — The five-day water supply disruption caused by Sungai Johor pollution has affected funeral management at several mosques in Johor Bahru, with at least three funerals in Skudai unable to be conducted due to the lack of water.
Volunteer Ridzal Mohd Hamdan said a 72-year-old man’s remains had to be taken to the nearby Al-Hidayah Mosque for cleansing and prayers, after Taman Impian Emas Mosque ran out of water.
“I asked in a WhatsApp group for nearby mosques that still had water and most were willing to help,” he told Bernama after completing the burial rites at Al-Hidayah Mosque here today.
Ridzal said the issue had been raised with Skudai assemblywoman Marina Ibrahim, who contacted Ranhill SAJ to send a water tanker to the affected mosque.
Taman Impian Emas Mosque secretary Mohd Asnawi Darmin said the mosque’s tank water was quickly depleted as residents used it for bathing since the disruption began.
He said the situation had affected not only funeral management but also residents going to work, school and performing prayers.
Nearly 1.8 million residents, involving 455,757 account holders, have been affected since last Friday after a burst sand-washing pond in Kota Tinggi contaminated Sungai Johor, forcing four water treatment plants to shut down.
Ranhill SAJ said as of yesterday, overall water supply recovery in Kota Tinggi, Johor Bahru, Pontian and Kulai had reached 93 per cent, though some areas remain dry.
Marina, in a Facebook post, said that although water supply recovery was improving, several areas in her constituency remained without water, adding that she was in constant contact with officials and state executive councillors to help resolve the issue.
