IPOH, Aug 4 (Bernama) — Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) President Ir. Mohamed Firouz Asnan has been elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), recognising his significant contributions to the country’s energy sector and leadership in advancing science, technology, innovation, and the economy (STIE) as key pillars of national development.
UTP in a statement today said Mohamed Firouz was elected under the discipline of Science and Technology Development and Industry, acknowledging his pivotal role in advancing Malaysia’s upstream oil and gas sector by leveraging technology and innovation to optimise the value of hydrocarbon resources while reducing environmental impact.
“His national-level expertise is further strengthened by a longstanding relationship with UTP, having served as Director of Transition and as a member of the University’s Board for six years.
“These roles have provided him with strategic insight crucial for UTP’s institutional growth and future direction,” the statement said.
Appointed as the first UTP President on May 1, Mohamed Firouz brings with him decades of leadership experience in the energy industry, particularly from his tenure at PETRONAS, where he was actively involved in ecosystem development.
The statement also mentioned that, at UTP, Mohamed Firouz is now steering efforts to strengthen competitive strategies, develop capabilities, and enhance collaboration between industry and academia.
“Under his leadership, UTP is expected to play a more prominent role in national development by producing future-ready talent, driving high-impact research, and fostering strategic partnerships to support Malaysia’s shift towards an innovation-led, technology-driven economy.
“His election to ASM places him among Malaysia’s foremost scientific and engineering minds and underscores UTP’s alignment with the Academy’s mission as well as the university’s commitment to lifelong learning, innovation, and societal advancement,” the statement added.
ASM is Malaysia’s foremost scientific advisory body, championing excellence in STIE to inform policy, drive innovation, and support sustainable, inclusive growth. Fellows are selected for their outstanding contributions in shaping national progress through research, industry, or policy leadership.
