KOTA BHARU, Sept 18 (Bernama) — Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has launched a mobile application called ‘CaknaStrok’ through its School of Medical Sciences (PPSP) to enhance the quality of care for stroke patients nationwide.
USM PPSP Public Health Medicine Specialist, Prof Dr Kamarul Imran Musa, said the platform offers guidance, support, and continuous communication channels between patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals, with modules developed by certified medical experts.
He said the initiative to create the app stemmed from the fact that stroke is the second most prevalent cardiovascular disease in Malaysia, with around 2,000 to 3,000 new cases recorded annually nationwide.
“Most patients only receive treatment for a short period in hospital before being discharged. Once home, the responsibility lies entirely on caregivers, and some of them do not know how to care for stroke patients properly.
“Through this app, caregivers can access daily care guidelines, nutrition, posture, speech therapy, hygiene, physiotherapy, purchase of healthcare equipment, medication reminders, emotional support, and more,” he said.
He told this to reporters after launching the ‘CaknaStrok’ application at PPSP, USM Health Campus, Kubang Kerian, officiated by the Dean of the USM School of Health Sciences, Prof Dr Wan Rosli Wan Ishak, here today.
Dr Kamarul Imran added that the application was developed in collaboration with researchers from both domestic and international institutions, including the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in the United Kingdom, the Clinical Research Centre of Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu, and the National Stroke Association of Malaysia.
“This application can be downloaded free of charge via the Google Play Store or Apple App Store on mobile phones nationwide. User privacy protection is the app’s top priority, with the implementation of industry-standard security protocols.
“Therefore, with this app, we hope it can assist stroke patient caregivers in providing better and more effective care through the various guidelines available. From time to time, we will also improve the app by adding modules for Q&A between users,” he said.
