UPTM Roundtable: MPU Key To Producing Inclusive, Ethical MADANI Graduates

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20 (Bernama) — The National Roundtable Conference organised by Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM) has agreed that General Studies (MPU) should be seen as a strategic instrument in producing Malaysia MADANI graduates who are inclusive, ethical and competitive.

Themed ‘Pendidikan Insaniah: Pemacu Negara Bangsa MADANI’ (Humanistic Education: Driving the MADANI Nation), the conference also stressed the importance of synergy between public and private higher education institutions, government and society to strengthen the holistic implementation of humanistic education.

In a statement, UPTM said the resolutions from the conference will be presented at the ministerial level.

“This step reflects UPTM’s commitment to strengthening the role of MPU, while also serving as a platform to champion the voices and interests of educators in this field,” the statement read.

UPTM vice-chancellor Assoc Prof Dr Sharifah Syahirah Sy Shiekh, in her welcoming address, said humanistic education is vital in producing competitive graduates who are ethical, principled and grounded in their identity as Malaysians.

“MPU is a key platform for humanistic education in ensuring the Malaysia MADANI agenda and the nation’s aspiration to achieve developed status,” she said, reaffirming UPTM’s commitment to advancing the humanistic education agenda.

Meanwhile, UKM’s Institut Kajian Etnik (KITA) Director Prof Ulung Datuk Dr Shamsul Amri Baharuddin said MPU should not be viewed as a secondary subject but rather as a means of instilling understanding of history, national identity and unity.

“Strengthening MPU in higher education institutions, in line with digital transformation and ongoing social changes, is crucial to ensure graduates are not only knowledgeable but also possess strong values, moral integrity and civic awareness,” he said.

The roundtable also discussed the empowerment of MPU in private higher education institutions through pedagogical innovation, digital technology integration and high-standard assessments, concluding with focus group discussions and a Gallery Walk showcasing research, innovation and best practices in humanistic education.
