UPM exposes fraudulent academic documents in uniformed appointments

KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) said that educational documents submitted by several individuals for appointments in a uniformed body have been found to be fraudulent.

The university’s Centre for Corporate Strategy and Relations said in a statement that UPM was ready to help if any party or agency wanted to verify the status of academic certificates.

The centre said there was no standard operating procedure (SOP) for any party to refer to UPM for interview screening or promotion.

It added that related parties could contact the Academic Governance Division of UPM’s Office of Academic and International Administration.

Harian Metro had previously reported that some individuals had been detected falsifying education documents to get promotions in a uniformed voluntary unit in the country.

Other individuals, including artists and businessmen, were charged a fee to get appointments over the past three years.

The university said such actions were inappropriate and could affect UPM’s name and reputation.

It added that UPM had the right to lodge a complaint and report to the authorities if the individuals did not stop their actions.

The statement said UPM also advised agencies or authorities to get confirmation from the relevant higher education institutions if they were in doubt about academic certificates submitted by individuals.

It said academic certificates could also be verified by referring to the Malaysian Qualifications Register (MQR), which is provided by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).

“Any individual or group is advised not to misuse the name of a higher education institution arbitrarily. Using fake academic certificates is a legal offence that can be subject to criminal charges,” the statement said.
