KUALA LUMPUR: A minor earthquake with a magnitude of 2.9 occurred in the waters off Perairan Johor Barat, near Batu Pahat, at 1.57pm today, but no tremors were felt on land.
According to Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip, the incident happened at sea. He said any magnitude below 3 is not considered significant if not felt by anyone.
“The tremors were not felt by anyone, so it is considered not significant,” he said when contacted.
This is the seventh earthquake reported in Johor over the past week.
A weak earthquake measuring 2.7 on the Richter scale struck Segamat at 7.29am yesterday.
The tremor was detected at coordinates 2.5° North and 102.8° East, about 2km northwest of Segamat, at a depth of 10km.
Prior to this, five earthquakes were recorded , beginning at 6.13am on Aug 24 with a 4.1-magnitude quake, followed by a second tremor on the same day measuring 2.8. Subsequent quakes occurred at 8.59am on Wednesday (3.2), 7.56am on Thursday (2.5), and 4.24am on Friday (3.4).
