KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 — United Nations (UN) secretary-general António Guterres today lauded Malaysia for facilitating the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, which culminated in the signing of the KL Peace Accord by both countries on Sunday.
Speaking on the sidelines of the UN-Asean Summit at KLCC today, Guterres also commended Malaysia’s unequivocal support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and statehood.
“In relation to Gaza, I would like to express my appreciation for what has been the constant and coherent foreign policy of Malaysia.
“There have been no double standards,” he told reporters at a press conference before attending the UN-Asean Summit.
When asked on the matter, Guterres said it was not yet clear what kind of force would be needed or under what circumstances it would be deployed.
“What is important now is to make sure the ceasefire holds and that the first phase of the agreement is fully implemented,” he said, referring to US President Donald Trump‘s 20-point peace plan.
Last month, Trump unveiled the peace plan to end the conflict in Gaza, which subsequently saw Hamas releasing all living Israeli hostages and the remains of several deceased hostages.
Anwar has also expressed support for the peace deal, saying it could pave the way for “a just and durable peace” in Gaza.
In another development, Guterres called on countries to increase humanitarian assistance to junta-led Myanmar and said a political revolution was required to restore civilian rule in the country.
He also rejected the notion that Myanmar would be able to hold free and fair elections under the junta’s watch.
