Umno Johor urges focus on development amid warning against divisive politics

KUALA LUMPUR: Johor said the state’s potential remained vast but time was limited, and urged it to focus on delivering tangible results for the people rather than being drawn into divisive politics.

Tebrau division chief Datuk Abdul Halim Suleiman said the state would not allow its future to be compromised by narrow political polemics or manoeuvres that do not contribute to development.

Speaking during the debate at the General Assembly 2025 today, Abdul Halim said Johor’s potential remained vast, but time was limited, making it crucial for the state to remain focused on delivering tangible results for the people rather than being drawn into divisive or self-serving politics.

He said Umno Johor’s stance was clear and principled, with strategic decisions for the party entrusted to the wisdom of the top leadership.

Drawing an analogy, he likened the party to a ship, with members as its crew and the leadership steering it towards its intended destination.

“What matters to Umno Johor is service excellence… service delivered with commitment and sincerity until it is genuinely felt by the people,” he said.

Abdul Halim reiterated that Umno must stand on its own strength, regardless of whether it decided to continue cooperation with Pakatan Harapan, revive previous alliances, form new partnerships or contest elections independently.

He said Johor would not seek to resolve internal issues by looking outward, nor would it borrow strength or rely on political lifelines from others, underscoring the importance of self-reliance.

In line with this, Abdul Halim said Umno Johor was seeking space and support for the state election to be held separately from the general election, arguing that Johor’s political landscape and development priorities warranted a distinct mandate.
