UKAS Plans Workshop To Help Media Grasp Sarawak’s New Economic Initiatives

KUCHING, Aug 9 (Bernama) — The Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) plans to hold a workshop for media practitioners to enhance their understanding of the state government’s new economic initiatives with technical elements.

Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and UKAS) Datuk Abdullah Saidol said the workshop would feature experts and technical officers to explain issues such as climate change, hydrogen energy and the carbon credit system.

“We will work together from time to time. For certain government initiatives that are highly technical, we propose using workshops to explain them, for example those involving hydrogen, carbon credit and so on,” he said at the Segulai Sejalai 2025 Night organised by UKAS and the Sarawak Information Department (JAPEN) here yesterday.

According to Abdullah, the nature of questions posed by journalists could indicate their level of understanding and therefore, he urged media practitioners to equip themselves with adequate knowledge beforehand.

He added that such knowledge could be further enhanced through briefings by ministry officials on the development of the new economy, enabling media practitioners to produce more accurate and easily understood reports.

Abdullah said close cooperation between government communication agencies such as UKAS and JAPEN and all media organisations was vital in strengthening efforts to convey government information to the public.

“That’s why I believe cooperation between UKAS at the state level and JAPEN as a federal agency with all media organisations is essential. We work together and build a good rapport,” he said.

He said the demand for a more inclusive and friendly communication approach between government agencies and the media was growing, particularly due to Sarawak’s wide geographical area and the need to reach rural communities.

“Sarawak is vast. We cannot all be in every place at the same time. Sometimes, there are events or incidents that occur in the far corners of the state,” he said.
