SHAH ALAM, Aug 6 (Bernama) — Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) has confirmed it stopped admitting international students into its postgraduate programmes a year ago, in line with its mission to prioritise Bumiputera education.
Vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Shahrin Sahib @ Sahibuddin said the decision followed an internal review to ensure alignment with the university’s founding mandate under the UiTM Act 1976 (Act 173) which refers to Article 153 of the Federal Constitution.
“We’ve not accepted direct international enrolments for a year, but the current international students are completing their studies,” he said after launching UiTM’s Jalan-Jalan Kemerdekaan walk in conjunction with the 2025 National Day celebration here today.
However, foreign students are still accepted under exchange programmes to maintain international learning elements.
On concerns over the commercial UiTMSeat Plus intake, Shahrin said it is not a primary entry channel like the Central University Admission Unit (UPU).
“Only 46 out of 199,000 students entered through UiTMSeat Plus, showing we remain focused on UPU applicants, especially from B40 backgrounds,” he said.
Student group Suara Siswa UiTM had questioned UiTMSeat Plus’s recognition in a recent circular on residential college placements, arguing it created inequality for low-income students who entered via the commercial route.
