NEW YORK, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) — The U.S. dollar strengthened in late trading on Tuesday.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, added 0.34 percent to 97.789 at 3 p.m. (1900 GMT).

In late New York trading, the euro fell to 1.1706 dollars from 1.1761 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound slipped to 1.3523 dollars from 1.3553 dollars in the previous session.

The U.S. dollar bought 147.40 Japanese yen, lower than 147.46 Japanese yen in the previous session. The U.S. dollar was up to 0.7977 Swiss francs from 0.7933 Swiss francs, and it climbed to 1.3847 Canadian dollars from 1.3814 Canadian dollars. The U.S. dollar rose to 9.3823 Swedish kronor from 9.3586 Swedish kronor.
