SEGAMAT: Two seismic stations are expected to be built in the district to monitor earthquake activities following recent tremors here.
Segamat district officer Mohd Ezzuddin Sanusi, who is also its disaster management committee chairman, said an application to construct the stations has been submitted to the state and federal governments as there are no seismic stations in the district.
“The proposed seismic stations will be equipped with weak-motion seismometers and a suitable location will be chosen away from human activity such as roads,” he said during a briefing at the Earthquake Disaster Risk Management Programme with Segamat district community leaders 2025 at Segamat Multipurpose Hall on Wednesday (Sept 3).
He said the stations would be developed by the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) and the locations are still under review and discussion with relevant agencies, including the Minerals and Geoscience Department.
There are 80 seismic stations nationwide, including six in Johor, comprising two in Johor Baru, and one each in Kluang, Batu Pahat, Mersing and Kota Tinggi.
Mohd Ezzuddin also announced that there were 62 reports of minor damage to residents’ homes due to the earthquake so far.
“Overall, we have received 64 reports of minor damage, including two in a surau, but there are no reports of serious damage. All the damage is minor, such as cracks in walls and ceilings and does not affect the structure of the building,” he said.
Also present were MetMalaysia’s National Weather and Earthquake Operations Centre senior director Maqrun Fadzli Mohd Fahmi, JMG director-general Datuk Zamri Ramli, National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) director-general Datuk Abdul Halim Hamzah and Johor Deputy Secretary Datuk Ismail Abu, who is also Johor Disaster Management Committee deputy chairman. – Bernama
