Two rally-goers arrested for allegedly 'whipping' effigy of PM

KUALA LUMPUR: Two people have been arrested over a video where an effigy bearing the likeliness of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ibrahim was “whipped” during the recent “Turun ” rally.

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail confirmed the arrests in a statement for investigation under the Sedition Act, Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and the Penal Code on Monday (July 28).

“On July 28, two men aged 21 and 47 years old were arrested. In addition, the devices used to upload the video were also seized,” he said, adding that both suspects would be remanded.

While Mohd Khalid did not name those arrested, the lawyer of Badrul Hisham Shaharin (popularly known as Chegubard) said his client was arrested at 2.30pm.

Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said there was video footage of the incident.

The rally on Saturday saw thousands of protesters walk the streets to urge to step down as Prime Minister.
