Two men were fined RM5,000 each for impersonating traffic police and extorting teenagers in Ipoh, facing jail if they fail to pay.
IPOH: Two men were fined five thousand ringgit each by the Magistrate’s Court after pleading guilty to impersonating traffic police and demanding money from two teenage boys.
Magistrate Mohd Harith Mohd Mazlan ordered Wong Jiun Wei, aged 24, and Lim Boon Ping, aged 40, to serve twelve months in jail if they fail to pay the fine.
The pair stopped a seventeen-year-old and a fifteen-year-old in front of a restaurant on Tong Seng Street in the Kinta district at 12.38 am on November 1.
They demanded money from the teenagers to avoid issuing summonses or taking them to the police station.
Both men were charged under Section 419 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum jail term of seven years or a fine or both.
In the same court Wong was also fined two thousand ringgit for possessing police equipment including a Royal Malaysia Police cap and boots.
He will serve five months in jail if he fails to pay this additional fine under Section 89 of the Police Act.
The prosecution highlighted the public interest and the offence’s impact on police integrity while noting evidence of a four hundred ringgit money transfer.
The defence counsel said it was the first offence for both men who work as a restaurant assistant and an electrician earning around fifteen hundred ringgit a month.
He urged the court for leniency in their sentencing.
Court records show the accused wore uniforms resembling traffic police including cream-striped black trousers during the incident.
They threatened to issue summonses over modified motorcycles unless the victims paid them money. – Bernama
