Two Indonesian lawmakers suspended for 'offending public sentiment'

JAKARTA: The National Democratic Party (NasDem) in Indonesia has suspended two of its members from the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), Ahmad Sahroni and Nafa Urbach, effective tomorrow.

According to the news portal Kompas, NasDem secretary-general Hermawi Taslim said the decision was made after the two lawmakers made remarks that were alleged to have offended the public and were considered a deviation from the party’s principles.

“In the effort to convey the people’s aspirations, there were statements from lawmakers, particularly DPR members from the NasDem party that offended public sentiment,” Hermawi said as quoted by the portal. He said the aspirations of the people remain the party’s main reference point.

Sahroni and Nafa Urbach had previously made statements that drew public criticism. Sahroni had called the proposal to dissolve the DPR an idea made by “fools”. He also expressed support for the Jakarta Metro Police arresting and imprisoning violent protestors, even if they were minors.

Meanwhile, Nafa Urbach defended an increase in allowances for DPR members, arguing that traffic congestion during her commute from her office in Kebayoran to the DPR was a burden.
