KUALA LUMPUR: Two Bangladeshi men, believed to be illegal taxi operators, were arrested while seeking passengers at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) yesterday.

Road Transport Department (RTD) director Azrin Borhan said one of the men, a 64-year-old senior citizen, had been detained three times previously.

He added that the suspect admitted to engaging in the activity for several years using a rented private vehicle.

“A Proton Waja vehicle, along with its driver, was seized during the arrest.

“Initial investigations found that the driver allegedly solicited, pleaded, and offered services to two Bangladeshi passengers at KLIA Terminal 1.

“The two passengers were heading to separate locations in , with a fare of RM140 payable upon arrival,” he said.

In a separate arrest on the same day, a Bangladeshi man was found attempting to solicit and offer transport services to seven Brunei passengers.

During questioning, the 27-year-old suspect demanded RM250 to transport the group from KLIA to a hotel near Suria KLCC.

“He claimed to have been working as an illegal taxi operator for the past year using his father’s vehicle.

“Checks showed he had been detained twice previously for the same activity,” Azrin said.

He warned the public not to engage in illegal taxi operations, as offenders could face fines of up to RM50,000 or imprisonment for up to five years.

Azrin also advised passengers to avoid unlicensed transport services to prevent untoward incidents.

“Members of the public are encouraged to use legitimate services, either through counters at KLIA Terminals 1 and 2, or by booking via e-hailing applications.

“Complaints can be submitted to [email protected] or via the e-aduan@JPJ platform with the complainant’s details and complaint information,” he said.
