BUKIT MERTAJAM, Sept 8 (Bernama) — The Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) field is no longer regarded as a second choice but has become a primary pathway in producing a competent and globally competitive professional workforce.
Polytechnic and Community College Education Department (JPPKK) deputy director-general (Planning) Dr Shamsuri Abdullah said the effectiveness of TVET was evident through the accomplishments of polytechnics and community colleges (PolyCC), which recorded a 98.8 per cent graduate employability rate last year, reflecting the industry’s confidence in the quality of education offered.
“Overall, PolyCC graduates do not face difficulties in securing employment because the learning system is based on a hands-on approach.
“We regularly review the curriculum and work closely with the industry to ensure that the programmes offered are in line with the current demands and needs of the job market,” he told reporters after officiating the 24th Seberang Perai Polytechnic (PSP) Convocation Ceremony here today.
In addition, Shamsuri said that the Polytechnic Industry Advisory Council (MPIP) was present not only at the national level but also in each polytechnic, providing guidance on various industry-related aspects to ensure that the educational programmes offered align with current industry needs.
He added that the JPPKK had faced demand beyond its capacity for PolyCC enrolment, demonstrating the public’s growing awareness of learning opportunities provided and career paths that could shape their future.
He said that the skills gained enabled graduates not only to find employment but also to pursue entrepreneurship or run their own businesses.
“Our system enables graduates not only to work or venture into business, but they also have the opportunity to continue their studies to a higher level. These three paths make PolyCC the largest contributor, accounting for over 40 per cent of post-SPM students choosing TVET majors,” he said.
He said that JPPKK was also constantly reviewing the programmes offered, particularly in emerging industries such as energy and electrical and electronics, to meet the needs of the high-tech sector, especially the rapidly growing semiconductor industry.
He said that a number of modifications were underway, including interventions aimed at enabling graduates to enter the industry more smoothly and earn higher starting salaries.
Earlier at the ceremony, Shamsuri presented the Director’s Award to two recipients, namely Muhammad Razin Abdul Wahab, a Diploma in Accountancy graduate, and Dhia Awatif Mohd Nadzli, a Diploma in Logistics Management graduate.
Seven graduates received the Academic and Co-Curricular Excellence Award, while a total of 1,093 graduates received their scrolls at the ceremony.
