KUALA LUMPUR: United States President Donald Trump‘s presence at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre will be the highlight of the first day of the 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits.
Trump is expected to arrive at KLIA’s Bunga Raya Complex on Sunday (October 26) morning before heading straight to the Asean Summit.
Newly elected Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s attendance will be closely watched as this will be her Asean Summit debut.
The day begins with the opening ceremony, then the Asean Prize presentation and the signing of Timor Leste’s admission declaration.
Timor Leste formally became an Asean member on Sunday.
After that, the plenary session will include the handover ceremony of the Second Protocol to amend the Asean Trade in Goods Agreement.
At midday, the retreat session will be held, followed by the 28th Asean Japan Summit and the 3rd Asia Zero Emissions Community Leaders’ Meeting.
After that, the 22nd Asean India Summit will take place, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attending virtually.
The 13th Asean US Summit will take place at the end of the day, and Trump is expected to attend.
Trump is expected to leave Kuala Lumpur on Monday (Oct 27) and head to Japan, where he will meet Takaichi in Tokyo.
The 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits begins on Oct 26 and ends on Tuesday (Oct 28).
