KUALA LUMPUR: The United States is committed to being a strong partner and a friend of Asean nations “for many generations to come”, says its President Donald Trump.
“One year ago, we were in a different position, but now we’re in the best position we’ve ever been,” he said in his opening remarks at the 13th Asean-US Summit held in conjunction with the 47th Asean Summit on Sunday (Oct 26).
He described the current period as the “Golden Age of America”, and together all sides could create incredible prosperity for the nations on both sides of the Pacific Ocean and seize new opportunities for all of our people.
“I’ve been here for a day, but it’s been an amazing experience to see some of the things that we’ve done.
“And the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) made sure I saw everything, every single thing.
“We even rode in the car together,” added Trump.
He thanked all the Asean leaders and Anwar specifically for hosting the summit.
“As you know, this has been an incredibly successful day for Malaysia. It’s an honour to be here.
“I promised I’d be here when the Prime Minister helped us so beautifully with our peace treaty, among two very strong countries, I think we can say this right now,” he said.
Earlier, Trump witnessed the Thailand-Cambodia peace deal, known as the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords, together with Anwar.
“And here I am, really thrilled to see what you’ve done. The United States is for all nations and this magnificent region.
“We’re all watching and seeing what’s taking place. Thank you very much,” he said.
He also congratulated the achievement of Asean countries in agreeing to send observers to ensure lasting peace and a settlement between Thailand and Cambodia.
“Today’s signing represents just one of eight conflicts that we’ve ended in eight months.
“The Trump presidency stands very honoured to have had the opportunity to save millions of lives.
“That also includes the end of the war in Gaza… (An) Agreement with 59 countries involved. We have numerous of them right here at this table as an example of Indonesia, my dear friend. I appreciate it,” he added.
