Trapped on rooftop: Community races against time to save dog

GEORGE TOWN: For nearly four agonising days, a lone Greyhound has been stranded on the rooftop of the Villa Kejora Apartment near here, perched atop the 17th floor, too frightened to move, too traumatised to trust.

His only companions: concrete, wind and silence.

The first call for help came in on Saturday and it was 4PAWS (Penang Animal Welfare Society) who answered — spending nearly three hours attempting a delicate rooftop rescue.

But fear had the dog in its grip. Each attempt to get close only sent him bolting further into danger.

However, the mission did not end there. It grew.

What began as a rescue effort has now become a symbol of compassion, as an entire community has mobilised to bring this terrified soul to safety.

Yesterday, the rooftop rescue operation saw a coalition of forces like never before.

Among the myriad of people were those from the Fire and Rescue Department, 4PAWS and International Aid for the Protection & Welfare of Animals (IAPWA).

Also there were the Penang Island City Council officers, Civil Defence Force, animal lovers and volunteers from , the Peranakan Chingay Pulau Pinang and a kind-hearted older man from a local volunteer group.

“Everyone is working tirelessly, but the dog is still too scared — refusing food, even fried chicken, and avoiding the trap cage.

“As of 9pm, the rescue team is still on site, united in their determination to bring this poor soul to safety. Let us all pray that the dog can finally be saved tonight,” 4PAWS said in a Facebook posting yesterday.

4PAWS has pleaded to take the dog in if no owner steps forward after the rescue.

As of this morning, the rescue mission is still underway.
