KOTA KINABALU: Public and goods transport companies should not wait until the last minute to register for the Subsidised Petrol Control System (SKPS), with the targeted RON95 petrol subsidy to be announced soon by the Finance Ministry.
Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali advised companies to register early to ensure they receive subsidy benefits as soon as the targeted RON95 petrol subsidy is announced and implemented.
The minister made this call, as the number of companies registering for SKPS remains low, with about 4,647 vehicles estimated to be eligible—yet only 89 vehicles in Sabah and six in Sarawak have registered.
“Don’t wait until the last minute. The process of registering and applying for SKPS is easy. If they register now, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry can approve it within a day, even within an hour if the documents are complete.
However, after approval, they must apply for fleet cards from their chosen oil companies, which will take time,” he said when met by reporters after attending the Sabah Undergraduates Convention at KDCA Hall in Penampang on Sunday (Sept 21).
Armizan said the targeted petrol subsidy will be implemented nationwide, unlike the diesel subsidy targeting, which is only implemented in Peninsular Malaysia while the subsidy is maintained in Sabah and Sarawak.
“Perhaps there is some confusion. They may think, as with diesel, that the petrol subsidy targeting does not involve Sabah and Sarawak,” he said.
The Transport Ministry disclosed that from September 15 to 20, there were 1,790 SKPS applications from companies involving 5,449 vehicles, with 164 companies involving 249 vehicles completing SKPS registration.
The ministry estimates that around 100,000 vehicles from public transport and goods companies nationwide are eligible to register through SKPS to enjoy the RON95 petrol subsidy.
