GEORGE TOWN: Traffic on the Penang Bridge came to a complete halt on Wednesday (Aug 6) when a car caught fire, leaving thousands of people heading from the mainland to the island stranded during the morning rush and potentially late for work.
The Fire and Rescue Department said in a statement that a car had reportedly caught fire at KM6.8 of the bridge at 7.04am today.
The fire caused all lanes to be closed to traffic temporarily.
Firemen from Jalan Perak Station on the island were dispatched and arrived at the scene to douse the fire at 7.20am, putting the situation under control within five minutes.
The car was 90% damaged by the fire, but no injuries were reported.
