KUALA LUMPUR: Timor Leste’s accession as an official member of Asean is a testament to the spirit of its people, said Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao.
In his speech following the signing ceremony for the Declaration on the Admission of Timor Leste into Asean, Gusmao said the accession reflects the country’s journey as a young democracy born from struggle, now entering a new era of collaboration and growth within one of the world’s most dynamic regions.
“Today, history is made. Timor Leste has been admitted as the 11th member state of Asean.
“For the people of Timor Leste, this is not only a dream realised, but a powerful affirmation of our journey.
“It is a testament to our resilience, determination and hope. For Asean, it marks the continuation of a vision, a truly united family of nations bound together by shared values, common aspirations and a collective destiny,” he said.
Gusmao said Timor Leste’s accession to Asean was not an overnight achievement, but the result of a long and deliberate process of national preparation since the country’s application in 2011.
“Since we applied in 2011, we have strengthened our institutions, refined our policies and enhanced our readiness, guided by the wisdom, support and passion of Asean and its pathways.
“For the people of Timor Leste, this new beginning brings immense opportunities in trade, investment, education and the digital economy.
“We are ready to learn, to innovate and to uphold good governance, strengthening our institutions as we work together towards sustainable development.
“This is not the end of a journey, but the beginning of an inspiring new chapter,” he said.
He also expressed gratitude to Asean member states and dialogue partners for supporting Timor Leste’s accession, and pledged to work together in realising the Asean vision.
“Your trust, encouragement and unwavering solidarity have made this historic day possible.
“We pledge to work with all member states to keep our vision peaceful, open and prosperous, and to be part of efforts to build resilience through unity, ensuring that no one is left behind.”
Timor Leste officially became the 11th Asean member state today, formalising its admission at the 47th Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur.
The milestone was marked by a historic signing ceremony for the Declaration on the Admission of Timor Leste into Asean, witnessed by leaders of the 10 other member states.
