KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 4 (Bernama) – Tenaga Nasional Bhd, which ensures secure and stable power supply to Malaysian households, must be commended for continuing to empower communities in discharging its corporate social responsibilities effectively in a wide range of areas.
Among these areas are education, healthcare, sports development, housing, zakat assistance, development of religious schools, green sustainability projects, as well as helping the poor and the needy, TNB said when announcing its financial results for the first half of 2025.
The power company has gone beyond financial returns to help women cancer patients, provide disaster relief to people affected by floods and storms throughout the country and given much-needed assistance to Palestinian refugees.
It has to be recognised that TNB provided significant financial support through CSR initiatives to not only improve the welfare of the community but also advance the nation’s endeavours towards a sustainable and digital future.
Besides this, TNB has undertaken programmes to enhance mosque and surau buildings, develop religious schools, welfare activities, implementing rooftop solar and solar-powered street lighting, human resource development and the rehabilitation of hospitals which complement government initiatives.
One major CSR initiative is enabling higher education courses in artificial intelligence (AI), which is very much what industries are looking for in today’s graduates.
To this end, TNB is introducing a new Bachelor’s and Master’s level in AI starting this September at University Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN).
These programmes offered at the university owned by TNB are tailored to meet the growing demand in the job market to keep pace with global technological trends.
UNITEN aims to empower graduates with advanced skills enabling them to pursue high value careers in energy and beyond.
This will contribute to Malaysia’s broader transition towards becoming a digital and sustainable economy.
This ties in neatly with nation-building being at the core of TNB’s CSR targeted initiatives which strive to support and improve the everyday life of Malaysians.
Elsewhere, TNB’s social impact via zakat assistance has been further strengthened with RM5.4 million channelled to over 21,500 asnaf or poor and needy beneficiaries.
This includes housing projects under Projek Baiti Jannati or home for the needy, which entails home repairs and rewiring, assistance for the vulnerable through support for Fisabilillah causes.
This programme includes mosque and surau enhancements, aid to tahfiz institutions and other welfare initiatives.
TNB also allocated RM99.7 million for other community-driven initiatives in the first half of 2025 including education support to needy students.
Of this, RM64.3 million was provided through UNITEN and Yayasan Tenaga Nasional (YTN) to support 1,515 students across the country.
This provided valuable opportunities for the students to continue their education, creating opportunities for future talent and contributing to Malaysia’s long-term human capital development.
No less important was educational welfare where RM3 million was distributed to 276 needy students and 50 schools under Program Sekolah Angkat TNB whereby the power company provides financial assistance.
Community outreach contributions amounting to RM2.5 million were given to 93,000 recipients in the form of food aid, community events and religious programmes.
As for healthcare initiatives, about RM335,000 was set aside for programmes benefitting 2,710 individuals which included providing equipment to Hospital Rehabilitasi Cheras and Hospital Pakar USM, patient support at Hospital Sultan Zainal Abidin and initiatives by Pertubuhan Prihatin plus support for women cancer patients and World Cancer Day 2025.
Some 3,156 individuals affected by floods and storms across several states and Palestinian refugees were given financial assistance amounting to RM541,250.
Sports development has always been a forte of TNB’s CSR programmes particularly in fostering national sporting excellence, for which RM4.8 million was directed towards hockey development.
This included contributions to the Malaysian Hockey Confederation, training clinics and equipment provision which benefitted 15,750 athletes and enthusiasts.
Touching on its Pulau Tenaga Hijau (PTH) initiative, TNB said RM360,513 was channelled into the installation of solar rooftops at SK Pulau Redang and Masjid Kg Baru Pulau Redang in efforts to promote cleaner energy use in schools and places of worship within the island community.
It also brought solar to the community where RM2.17 million was given to implement rooftop solar and solar-powered street lighting projects across high-impact community sites.
This included Anjung Kasih hospitals, worship houses, island villages, rural schools and education hubs.
It’s abundantly clear that TNB is giving back to society significantly through targeted initiatives that support everyday Malaysians.
In the process, the company has contributed to building stronger communities and more importantly equipping the nation for a more competitive, sustainable and digital future.
