KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm advisory for Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Negri Sembilan and five other states, with heavy rain and strong winds expected until 9pm today.
In a posting on its Facebook page today, MetMalaysia said the other five states are Perak, Melaka, Pahang, Sarawak and Sabah.
Labuan is also affected by the advisory.
The department said thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds are expected in the Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Hulu Langat districts in Selangor, as well as Jelebu, Seremban, Port Dickson, Kuala Pilah and Rembau in Negri Sembilan.
In Perak, the advisory applies to the Batang Padang and Muallim districts, while Raub and Bentong in Pahang are also impacted by the weather advisory.
In Sarawak, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Kapit (Song, Kapit and Bukit Mabong), Bintulu and Limbang (Lawas) may experience severe weather. Sabah’s interior regions — including Sipitang, Tenom, Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Keningau and Tambunan — along with Kudat (Kota Marudu) are also under alert.
MetMalaysia said the alert is issued when there are signs of thunderstorms producing rainfall exceeding 20 mm per hour that is either imminent or expected to last more than an hour.
The warnings are short-term and valid for no more than six hours for each issuance.
