PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across eight states as well as the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and , effective until 10am on Saturday (Dec 13).

MetMalaysia, in a statement, said the severe weather is expected to affect Langkawi in Kedah; several districts in Perak (Manjung, Perak Tengah, Bagan Datuk and Hilir Perak); and multiple areas in Terengganu, including Kuala Nerus, Kuala Terengganu, Marang, Dungun and Kemaman.

A similar warning has also been issued for parts of Pahang (Maran, Kuantan, Pekan and Rompin); the entire state of ; Negeri Sembilan (Jelebu, Seremban, Port Dickson and Rembau); Melaka (Alor Gajah and Melaka Tengah); and Johor (Pontian, Kulai, Kota Tinggi and Johor Bahru).

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.
