KOTA BARU: Three abandoned cars, each packed with 40 jerrycans of petrol worth a total of RM23,800, were found on the Sultan Yahya Petra Bridge early Wednesday (Nov 5) morning following a failed attempt to smuggle 3,000l of fuel out of the area.

The discovery was made during an integrated operation to combat the misappropriation of controlled goods, conducted by the branch of the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry in collaboration with the Region Three Marine Police Force Pengkalan Kubor.

State Domestic Trade director Azman Ismail said the operation, which began at 4.35am, led to the arrest of one local man, while two other suspects managed to flee.

“Authorities instructed the vehicles to stop, but the drivers sped off and made U-turns against traffic to evade arrest,” he said in a statement.

The operation involved three vehicles, all local models. One of the cars stopped on the shoulder of the Sultan Yahya Petra Bridge before the driver fled on foot.

Azman said the case is being investigated under Section 21 of the Control of Supplies Act 1961 (Act 122) for possession of controlled goods with the intent to commit an offence. – Bernama
