'There are candidates who are more deserving', says Sanusi on PN chairmanship


ALOR STAR: , election director, Datuk Seri Muhammad Md Nor, has ruled out any interest in becoming the next Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman following Tan Sri Yassin’s resignation.

Instead, the Kedah Menteri Besar proposed , vice-president, and Terengganu Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, for the post.

“I don’t agree. There are candidates who are more deserving. I propose Samsuri, the Terengganu Menteri Besar,” said when contacted amid calls for him to succeed as PN chairman.

He said the PN chairman’s post was a crucial position, noting that the individual would eventually emerge as a national leader.

“And Samsuri is better than me to fill the position,” he added.

said several factors needed to be considered in selecting the next chairman, stressing that the decision should not be based on who commanded greater media attention.

He also said his role within the party differed from that of Samsuri.

“I am a general on the battlefield, working closely with the grassroots. Samsuri is a strategist who manages the party’s direction,” he said.

Yesterday, Sanusi received an endorsement from , Ulama Council chief, Datuk Ahmad Yahaya, who proposed that the Kedah Menteri Besar be named the next PN chairman.

Ahmad was reported as saying Sanusi was an interesting choice as he was respected by both supporters and rivals and had a strong grasp of politics.

, who is also Bersatu president, stepped down as PN chairman effective Jan 1 following the political crisis in Perlis.

He had led the coalition since Aug 7, 2020, when PN was officially registered.
