MANILA: Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said yesterday that all its relevant government agencies have been placed on full alert as Typhoon Uwan (international name Fung-wong) intensifies and moves closer to Northern Luzon, the Philippine News Agency (PNA) reported.
In a statement, Marcos urged the public to remain calm but vigilant, stressing the importance of preparedness to minimise the potential impact of the typhoon.
“We continue to monitor the intensification of Typhoon Uwan as it approaches Northern Luzon.
“All government agencies are on full alert and have taken immediate action to ensure the safety of our fellow citizens,” he said.
Marcos advised the public to follow safety advisories issued by Local Government Units (LGUs) and to keep monitoring official weather updates.
As of 11am, Typhoon Uwan was located 680km east of Borongan City, Eastern Samar, or 760km east of Catarman, Northern Samar, moving westwards at 35km/h, with maximum sustained winds of 140km/h near the centre and gusts of up to 170km/h.
According to the weather bureau, Uwan is forecast to rapidly intensify and may reach the super typhoon category by tonight or tomorrow, with faster intensification not ruled out due to favourable conditions. — BERNAMA
