PETALING JAYA:

Thailand’s world No 3 mixed doubles pair Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran proved too strong for Malaysians Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai in their quarter-final tie at the Arctic Open today.

Soon Huat-Shevon, the world No 8 pair, had no answer to the powerful Thai duo, losing 12-21, 14-21 in a match lasting 34 minutes at the Energia Areena in Vantaa, Finland.

The Malaysian husband-and-wife team qualified for the semi-finals of the championships last year but failed to make it to the final.

Soon Huat-Shevon are still hunting for their first title this year, having been eliminated in the early rounds at most of the BWF World Tour events so far.

They are currently ranked No 6 in the race to the prestigious World Tour Finals, scheduled to be held in December.

With 12 more events to go this season, the top eight in each category will qualify for the lucrative Super 1000 event.

Dechapol-Supissara are currently leading the pack, with Malaysian pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei at the No 4 spot.

Women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan-M Thinaah and men’s doubles pairs Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Choong Hon Jian-Haikal Nazri will be playing their quarter-finals matches later tonight.
