KUALA LUMPUR: Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) has lodged reports with the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) following the circulation of several defamatory and provocative videos on social media.
In a statement today, TH said it takes the matter seriously and is closely monitoring social media posts, whether videos or writings, that attempt to mislead the public and tarnish the institution’s image.
Its group managing director and chief executive officer, Datuk Seri Mustakim Mohamad, said the videos, containing baseless allegations and provocations, were misleading the public about TH’s branding and governance initiatives.
“TH was established primarily to enable Malaysian Muslims to save for the pilgrimage. However, it has become better known for its haj services. At the same time, haj costs continue to rise while depositors’ savings have not kept pace.
“Many depositors do not have sufficient savings to perform the pilgrimage.
“To address this, TH is undertaking a rebranding initiative to strengthen its role as the preferred Islamic savings institution, encouraging systematic and consistent savings,” he said.
Mustakim said technical expertise was required for the complex rebranding initiative, which is being supported by a consortium formed by TH.
“Haj management remains fully handled by a 100 per cent Bumiputera Muslim team. However, technical support is required for this rebranding exercise.
“TH must evolve into a customer-centric Islamic savings institution with strategies and branding that are relevant and effective, keeping pace with Malaysia’s dynamic demographics,” he added.
He said the rebranding plan aims to re-empower TH as a respected Islamic savings institution, enabling Muslims to grow their savings and fulfil their haj obligations.
