Terengganu executive councillor for local government, housing and health Wan Sukairi Wan Abdullah said the state government agreed to enforce the ban in a meeting yesterday.
PETALING JAYA:

Terengganu is set to enforce a ban on the sale of e-cigarettes and vapes at business premises across the state from Aug 1.

Local government, housing and health committee chairman Wan Sukairi Wan Abdullah said the state would also ban the advertisement of such products.

Wan Sukairi said the state government had agreed to enforce the ban at a meeting yesterday, adding that a three-month grace period from May 1 to July 31 will be granted before full enforcement begins on Aug 1.

“This decision is a proactive measure by the state government to curb the sale and use of electronic cigarette products or vapes, which pose health risks, particularly among the younger generation,” he said in a statement.

Under the new policy, the state will uphold its existing practice of not approving business licences for premises selling products in line with local authority by-laws currently in force.

Wan Sukairi said the licensing conditions will be tightened to ensure full enforcement of the ban, including action against unlicensed premises.

“Any operator found to be continuing business during the enforcement period will face stern action under local by-laws framed under the Local Government Act 1976 (Act 171),” he said.

“This includes being issued compounds, seizure of items and, in cases of continued violations, prosecution in court.”

The state government has also decided that it will no longer accept sponsorships from vape manufacturers or distributors for government-organised programmes or events.

As part of efforts to support those affected, the state, through the Terengganu Entrepreneur Development Foundation, will offer entrepreneurial training and alternative business opportunities to help vape shop operators and workers transition to more sustainable and safer sectors.

“The state government calls on all parties to fully cooperate in implementing this policy for the wellbeing of the people and to ensure a healthier and more prosperous Terengganu,” said Wan Sukairi.
