KUDAT: A National Day picnic at Pantai Simpang Mengayau ended in tragedy today after a teenager died from drowning.
The 15-year-old boy was reported missing while swimming with his family at about noon before he was found unconscious. Attempts to resuscitate him failed and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Kudat Fire and Rescue station chief Darickson Galanang said his team received an emergency call at 12.28pm. A team of eight officers and personnel, along with an Emergency Medical Services Unit, were immediately sent to the location.
“Upon arrival at the location, the teenage male victim was feared to have drowned while swimming with his family. The victim was found by the rescue team at 1pm, about 100 metres from the beach,” he said when contacted today.
Darickson said the unconscious victim was immediately given respiratory support. The Health Ministry, who were present to assist, confirmed the victim’s death at 1.43pm.
He said the body was then handed over to the police for further action and the operation was concluded at 2pm.
