BALIK PULAU: A teacher who slit his wife’s throat with a kitchen knife in an incident at Taman Tunas Muda, Sungai Ara, on Wednesday has been remanded for six days.
The remand order, effective today until Sept 4, was issued by Magistrate Zaireen Zainudin at the Balik Pulau court following an application by the police.
The remand was granted to allow police to investigate the case under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.
Earlier, the 30-year-old suspect, wearing a T-shirt, a face mask and with his left hand bandaged, appeared calm as he arrived at the court compound at 9.13am, escorted by policemen.
There were visible stitches on the suspect’s neck, believed to be from a self-inflicted wound during the same incident.
The suspect was represented by lawyers Muhaimin Hashim and Yazid Khairul Azman.
It was reported that pressure from a bank loan and “buy now, pay later” instalments was believed to have sparked the fight that led to the attack.
In the 6am incident, the suspect allegedly attacked his wife with a kitchen knife before turning the weapon on himself.
Police and family members have described the couple as “harmonious.”
